We install smart locks every week, and we also get called to remove the ones people regret. That second list is what makes this guide worth reading. Plenty of smart locks are excellent. Some are gadgets wearing a deadbolt costume, and Arkansas weather finds them fast. After 15 years of installs, repairs, and removals around Hot Springs, here's the honest version of what to buy and why.
Do You Even Need One?
Yes, more often than you'd think, and not for the sci-fi reasons. The people who love their smart locks are the ones who solved a real problem:
No more hidden keys. Guests, cleaners, the AC repair visit, kids after school. Codes replace the rock by the door, and you can delete a code the moment it should stop working.
Lake and rental properties. This is the killer use around here. Cabin owners at Lake Hamilton and short-term rental hosts can rotate a code per guest, see when doors open, and never drive across town over a key again. For rental owners, this one upgrade pays for itself in gas.
The self-locking door. Auto-lock after a set time means the door you forgot about locked itself. For anyone who's ever turned the car around to check, that feature alone is the sale.
If none of that lands, a quality standard deadbolt is still a great lock, and we'll happily tell you to keep your money.
What Arkansas Does to Cheap Smart Locks
Our climate is the test lab. Humidity swells doors, and a swollen door puts pressure on the bolt. A strong smart lock motors through slight resistance; a weak one strains, drains batteries, and starts throwing errors every August. Heat cooks electronics on west-facing doors, storms knock out Wi-Fi at exactly the wrong moment, and lake-adjacent moisture gets into bargain keypads within a couple of seasons.
So the Arkansas rules: buy quality, not features. Prefer a lock with a physical key backup. Pick battery-powered models with real battery life over always-connected gimmicks, and make sure the door itself is fitted right, because most "smart lock problems" we see are actually door alignment problems the lock is being blamed for. That's an installer's fix, and it's part of every install we do.
Keypad, App, or Full Smart Home?
Keypad locks are the workhorses. Codes on a keypad, no app required, batteries last ages, nothing to update. For most homes, and especially for guest and rental doors, this is the sweet spot, and the good ones shrug off weather.
App-connected locks add remote control, guest codes from your phone, and open/close history. Worth it for rentals and frequent travelers. The trade-off is more electronics, more updates, and a dependence on your home internet behaving.
Full smart-home integration ties the lock to cameras, doorbells, and voice assistants. Great when someone in the house enjoys managing it. If nobody does, it's complexity waiting for a Tuesday to fail. Buy the layer you'll actually use.
The Two Mistakes People Make
Cheap lock, expensive door. A bargain smart lock on your main entry is a weak deadbolt with a battery. The lock is the security part; the smart is convenience. Spend accordingly.
DIY install on a misaligned door. The instructions assume a perfect door, and Arkansas doors are rarely perfect. If the bolt drags in the strike, the motor fights it on every cycle until something gives. A professional install includes fixing that, which is why our installs don't generate callback lists.
And keep one thing in mind: a smart lock doesn't end lockouts, it changes them. Dead batteries, forgotten codes, and app lockouts are real calls we take, which is why the physical key backup matters, and why we're still answering 24/7 either way.
Pairing It With a Move
The single best time for all of this is right after buying a place, when you're already rekeying or replacing locks. One visit: rekey the secondary doors, put a quality smart lock on the main entry, key everything else alike. New house, clean slate, no mystery keys.
