Then the price changes. The tech looks at your ordinary lock and declares it "high security" or "impossible to pick." The advertised price becomes a service fee, and the real bill lands at many times the quote. On house calls, the favorite move is drilling a lock that never needed drilling, then charging you for a cheap replacement lock on top. Payment is demanded in cash or through an app, and the "company" behind it can't be found the next day.
The Red Flags, in Order
A price that sounds like bait. A professional cannot drive to you, open your car without damage, and stay in business at the price those ads show. If a quote sounds impossible, it is. It's the hook, not the price.
No straight answer on the phone. Ask the company's name and where they're actually based. Scam dispatchers answer with "locksmith service" and dodge the location question, because they're answering for a hundred towns at once.
An unmarked car and no ID. Legitimate locksmiths show up in a marked vehicle or with company ID, and in Arkansas you can ask to see credentials. A tech who arrives in a plain sedan with a drill and no paperwork is telling you everything.
Drilling as the first move. Real locksmiths pick, decode, or bypass locks nondestructively almost every time. Drilling is a last resort for damaged or failed locks, not the opening act on a standard deadbolt. If the drill comes out in the first five minutes, stop the job.
Cash only, price rising. The quote should survive the drive to your house. Ours does.

- Look at the reviews, and look at where they are. A real local company has reviews from real neighbors going back years, not a burst of five-star reviews posted the same month.
- Match the phone number across the website, the Google listing, and the ad. Scam networks rotate numbers constantly.
