What a Car Key Is Now
If your car is newer than the mid-1990s, the key is more than cut metal. Most carry a transponder chip that must be programmed to your car before the engine will start. Remotes and flip keys add buttons and a circuit board. Push-to-start fobs are small computers that talk to the vehicle constantly. That's the single biggest thing that sets the price: you're not buying a key, you're buying a key, its electronics, and the programming session that marries it to your car.
The Dealership Route
Dealerships do this work, and for a handful of very new or unusual models they're the only option. The trade-offs are the ones you'd guess. The car usually has to come to them, which means a tow if you have no working key. Parts often get ordered rather than stocked. And you wait, sometimes days, for a slot in the service department.
Where dealers make sense: brand-new models in their first year or two, some European makes with locked-down security, and warranty situations where the key work is covered.
The Mobile Locksmith Route
A mobile automotive locksmith comes to the car, cuts the key on-site, and programs it there. No tow, no service appointment, and for most makes and models on the road, same-day. The vehicle itself. Some brands use pricier chips and locked-down programming. A common pickup is usually simpler than a European sedan.
Where and when. A scheduled visit at your house beats an emergency call at a boat ramp at 10 p.m. Planned always beats stranded.
The Fob Battery Head-Fake
Before you replace anything: if your key still turns the car on but the buttons quit, or your push-to-start says "key not detected" once in a while, you may be one battery away from a fix. The Bottom Line
For most vehicles in most situations, a mobile locksmith gets you driving sooner, without a tow, at the car's location, and that convenience usually comes with a smaller bill than the dealership route, not a bigger one.
